DIGEST Datum Codes

Horizontal Datum from DIGEST DIGEST Code Ellipsoid
Notes: (1) Horizontal datums can be used as vertical datums when the measure is made relative to the ellipsoid. (2) The original DIGEST table did not identify an Ellipsoid for every datum, and all misspellings are copied from the original DIGEST table as is.

Within the context of DIGEST, vertical datums were referenced in one of two ways: Geodetic or Gravity-Related. These are not the only conceivable vertical datums of course, but these two categories sufficed for the needs of the DIGEST at the time.

The horizontal datums in the preceding table are also examples of Geodetic vertical datums in the case where the elevation is measured relative to the ellipsoid described by the horizontal datum.

Under DIGEST, Gravity-Related vertical datums were either referenced in some manner to Mean Sea Level (MSL) (in which case they could be called Sounding Datums) or to a Geopotential Model such as the EGM96 Model Geoid (see DIGEST for specific definitions of these terms).

The following table provides the DIGEST codes for various Sounding Datums, which were vertical datums used to measure water depth; these individual sounding datums were defined in the IHO hydrographic Dictionary in use at the time DIGEST was published.
