3D Geospatial Modeling & Simulation Summit II

Conincident with the 2017 I/ITSEC conference convened in Orlando FL in late November, conference attendees, experts from across the Modeling & Simulation community along with leadership of the Simulation Interoperability Standards Organization (SISO), the Open Geospatial Consortium (OGC), and the US Geospatial Intelligence Foundation (USGIF) met to discuss advancements in interoperabilty, and to identify areas for future joint work. The meeting was held on the morning of 29 November vrom 0830-1130 at the Orange County Convention Center. About 50 persons were in attendance in person with a few attending remotely via net meeting.

A 3D Geospatial Modeling & Simulation White Paper draft was presented to attendees, with a request for their review and feedback to the organizers listed below. In addition, a series of presentations were delivered on the status of program efforts focused on advancing standards-based interoperabilty. These presentations are provded below as reference. Leadership across the M&S goverment / user and SDO community agreed to meet in February 2018 in Orlando to discuss revising a roadmap of cooperative activities based on the disucssion at this meeting, and ongoing advancements underway in each organization. The goal -- work toward coordination on all major efforts, with minimal to no duplication of work, and to jointly advance a common interoperabiolty architecture for use by the M&S and geospatial communities to break down data discovery, access, processing and distribution challenges. Further, there was agreement to reconvene a follow on Summit session at the upcoming USGIF GEOINT 2018 conference being held in Tampa, FL from 22-25 April. Details on this meeting will be forthcomign on this wiki, and by email to those who have registered for 3D Geospatial M&S Program emails.

This meeting was an extension of a previous Summit convened in Septebmer 2016 with the goal or more formally aligning the interests and ongoing work of organizaitons across the M&S and geosdpatial communities. This 3D Geospatial Modeling & Simulation Summit drew more than 100 attendees and an array of presenters to discuss and more closely coordinate on opportunities and challenges related to improving interoperability within the M&S environment, as well as achieving enhanced interoperability with the broader geospatial IT domain. Our vision established at the first summit was to work toward a distributed global model of the world supported by a range of interoperable products, processes, services and data sources. Our goal through standards and related best practices is to improve the ability to ingest and process an ever-expanding array of sources, to improve agility of the processing environment, and further enable geospatial technologies to rapidly mobilize M&S products in planning and command and control.
